Robert Hoogland hands over chairmanship to Georgy Sonneville

01-04-2025

During the general assembly on March 31, Robert Hoogland officially handed over the chairmanship of BC Drop Shot to Georgy Sonneville after more than four years.

With the appointment of Georgy Sonneville as the new chairman during the General Assembly, a new chapter begins for BC Drop Shot. At the same meeting, Martijn Vonk was enthusiastically appointed as the new treasurer. This marks a fresh start built upon the solid foundation laid in recent years by outgoing chairman Robert Hoogland.

Reflections from a Passionate Leader

In his farewell speech, Robert Hoogland looked back on his four-plus years as chairman with pride. The club’s strategy of investing in growth proved to be a resounding success: with around 30% membership growth, BC Drop Shot has now become one of the larger badminton clubs in the Netherlands.

Hoogland expressed deep appreciation for the club’s many volunteers. The youth committee, through its unique approach, was credited for driving substantial growth. The tournament committee received praise for organizing exciting events that also positively impacted the club's finances. He also acknowledged the volunteers who consistently transform the venue into a top-level playing field worthy of the premier league.

Key Challenges for the Future

Yet, there were also words of caution and reflection. The conversion of the sports hall into a padel facility presents potential challenges. Furthermore, Hoogland emphasized the need for thoughtful decision-making in technical policies—particularly around the sustainability of the premier league team and how it connects with other club levels. “The gap between the top division and the rest remains too wide,” he warned, posing a threat to long-term continuity.

Costs are also rising—shuttles, for instance, are becoming increasingly expensive. And despite the support of dedicated sponsors and substantial investments, a national championship title—a personal goal for Hoogland—remains elusive.

A Solid Foundation for the New Board

Though he won’t be completing the season himself, Hoogland remains hopeful. “If the new board continues on this path, this season could deliver fantastic results.” BC Drop Shot is on solid financial footing and well-positioned for continued success.

Hoogland, who has now been a member for 41 years, ended with a lighthearted yet heartfelt remark: “I hope to be around to celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary in 2047.”
